Starting EMDR therapy can feel daunting so here you will find answers to common questions about our sessions, technology, and what to expect along the way.

Frequently asked questions

Explore information on how EMDR works, preparing for your online video consultations, and practical arrangements such as session durations and cancellation policies.

What are the phases of EMDR and what should I expect at the beginning?

EMDR follows structured phases starting with thorough history taking, preparation, and resourcing before moving on to target assessment and reprocessing. In the early stages, we focus on establishing a safe therapeutic relationship, teaching emotional regulation techniques, and identifying key themes or memories to work through.

How does EMDR therapy work and who is it best suited for?

EMDR goes to past experiences to reprocess unmetabolised memories and information, creating meaningful change in the present through processing past experiences along with bilateral stimulation (BLS). It is best suited to clients who are willing to explore how early life events, attachment, or trauma have shaped their current understanding of themselves, others, and the world. Because it is distinctly different from traditional talking therapies, experiencing it firsthand often provides the clearest sense of its transformative impact and your clinician will always guide you and make an initial assessment in phase 1 and 2 as to whether they recommend moving to phases 3-7 for processing.

How long does a course of therapy last?

The overall length of therapy depends entirely on your personal history, the complexity of the issues, and your individual goals. Some clients achieve significant resolution in a focused number of sessions, whereas others benefit from longer-term, phased work to address deeper attachment and trauma patterns.

Is online EMDR therapy as effective as in-person treatment?

Yes, online EMDR is highly effective and some clients even report it as more convenient and preferrable. Conducted in the comfort of your own home, our specialised platform facilitates bilateral stimulation seamlessly, allowing you to reprocess traumatic memories safely and effectively while supported by an experienced clinician.

How do online sessions work and how do I prepare for my call?

Sessions take place on Bilateral Base, a dedicated therapy platform that delivers BLS directly on screen. You will receive a secure video link that remains the same every week, so you can easily save it. Before your appointment, check that your microphone and camera work properly via the Bilateral Base pre-call test. A laptop, a stable internet connection, and noise-cancelling headphones are recommended for the best experience.

How long are the sessions and do you offer intensive therapy?

Initial therapy sessions last 60 minutes. As we advance into reprocessing, sessions can be extended to 90 minutes or longer if suitable. For busy professionals who cannot commit to weekly appointments or want focused progress, therapy intensives are also available. These take place across multiple days with 2 to 3-hour extended sessions, offered following a clinical suitability assessment. There is also an option of an intensive retreat delivered in Cyprus which can be discussed on an individual basis.

What is your cancellation policy?

A minimum of 48 hours' notice for any cancellation or rescheduling. If an appointment is cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, the full session fee remains payable.
